7th Month Finally Over

Phew... 5 deaths in 1 week.

Whole year nothing happen. Then the 1st week of the 7th month...

a. my friend's father passed away, after the wake, I returned home to find...

b. another wake at the void deck of my block.

c. 2 days later, my Yahoo! Auction buyer called to cancel appointment as he has to attend wake.

d. My Internet friend's friend also had someone passed on in the family.

e. Before the 1st week ended... one of my ex-schoolmate had to miss a gathering due to a relative passing away.

5 deaths in 1 week. And the rest of the year... nothing.

Did the death gates really opened?

White lights, clinical touch, I donned on my 'surgery suit', the dull cray-green plastic type.
Everybody in the surgery room were in face-masks, clear goggles and rubber cream-white gloves.
I could imagine them smiling behind those face-masks, but couldn't be sure if they were smiling for me or at my cash.

I laid down, my pair of eyes at their mercy.

Metal forks held my eye open as an attendant squeezed numbing eye-drops to my right eye and explained to me the purpose of the eye drops.
The doctor made a final check on my right eye and asked if I am ready. Ready, I said.

More metal to come, a metal ring. I don't mind metal, as my horoscope says metal is one of my basic element. A black plastic holder comes along. I see everything as I am conscious and everything is happening, of course, right in front of my eyes. Your vision is going to get blurred and dim for a while, said the doctor. I know what is going to happen next, since I had a watch a complete computer-simulated lasik surgery before my own surgery.

Suckkkk... and held in pressure, the black plastic sucker was doing its job. The doctor swiftly slide in another piece of metal, a tray for the next step. The attendant firmly shouted, Stable! Char! In less than a micro-second, the keto-something knife came and went away in a flash. I was beginning to feel nauscous due to the reverse inclined chair and the sucking... My body was beginning to tremble a little, but after spending more than two thousand dollars on this, I am not going to let it mess this thing up.

The worst is over but the action is still hot.

With only the forks left, it was a delicate procedure to lift the cornea flap that was cut by the keto-something knife. The laser equipment was moved into position over my right eye and I see a red light. I had to hold my eye steady at the red light for 15 seconds while the laser burnt away layers of my cornea. So, we begin now, said the doctor as his hand started to move away.

Pluck..pluck.pluck.pluckpluckpluckpluckpluck, etc. the laser started from the outside and spiraled inwards. I can see the red light better at each spiral pluck. Joy and satisfaction begun as I begun to see the red light as a LED light which I could identify. All the bad feelings were ignored at this point as I was getting elated with each pluck. Well... this must end in time too, as the laser finished its job.

The doctor's hands returned with a guiding pick and eye wipes, closing the flap and ensuring that no air bubbles are trapped within. It is done, he said, as we shifted to the left eye and began the same procedure again, this time, I was not so nauscous.

... The operation is a success! What nice words to listen to and to listen to again.

Nabbed by plain-clothes police last Saturday early morning, a young man in his late twenties was caught red-handed as he broke into a parked car near Mohd Sultan Road. A short chase began as soon as he was confronted by the police with stolen goods in his hands.

I was trying to avoid the city area as much as possible. Suntec City was turning into Fortress Suntec. The few immediate roads surrounding it was closed to the public. Security scans were required to enter the event areas. I even shifted my Korean lessons away from Shaw Towers, which is just across the road.

Then my Japanese friend called me and said they needed a dispatch rider for one of the day. Well, some money is always welcomed. I agree to it.

The day before my duty, I checked my motorcycle, oiled the chains, topped up the fluids, looked at the tires and oh my... lumps on the rear tire... two lumps... I didn't know tires can grow lumps. Quickly asked one of the adjacent bikers, he says likely rubber vulcanised already, must change, in case it blows up while riding. The front tire was show signs of fatigue too. Decided to change both tires immediately. Took it to the workshop and spend almost all the money that I would earn the next day.

Zero sum game? But I got a fresh pair of tires for free.

No photographs this time.
Firstly, police everywhere, don't want to take photograph anywhere near them and get questioned.
Second, on the move too busy to take any photo, need to get things delivered as fast as possible.

Learning points:
- Buy a tank bag, the kind that magnetized to the fuel tank. Makes taking and putting in things easier. Also can put map on top of it.
- Wear handsfree earpiece for handphone. Missed a few calls and have to stop and call back.

WOMAD in the Heartlands (Hougang)

WOMAD 2006 started off in the Heartlands before its main show at Fort Canning Park on 25-27 Aug 2006.

We were here to promote our museum as well as at the main show. Despite cloudy skies, we were very fortunate that it did not rain at all.
That's me.
Even before the show starts at sunset, the mats were almost full. Well it's free entry for anyone.
The whole show was very good. Our booth was only 2 booths away from the stage so we enjoyed most of the performance, mainly the music as we still have to attend to all the visitors to the booth. A glimpse of the stage...

I've been helping out a friend at MoST (Museum of Shanghai Toys).

The Story (from the curator, Marvin Chan) So Far..

"It happened in 1989 when I travelled to Malaysia and found few China-made tin toys. They recalled some of my childhood memories. But during that time, I collected any type of toys & I don't care where do they made, as long as they are vintage. 1990, I went to China Shanghai, I knew some toy workers there and they were surprised a young man from Singapore is interested in toys. To them, toys were just a livelihood for them. After they heard my story, they introduced me to another worker who had worked at the toy factory for about 40 years.

We talked about toys the whole day and he gave me a 1930s toy catalog when I left Shanghai. I promised him I will have my toy museum one day and also help him fulfill his dream. 1997 onwards, I am forwarding to build my dream step by step. I wrote a book about Chinese toys in 1997. Later, I set up Singapore 1st tin toy design company in 1999 to manufacture tin toys. In the same year, I met another old man in Shanghai who was 93 years at that time. He also encouraged me to fulfill his dream and handed me some of his toys as a present which he bought for his son in the 1930s.

In 2005, I started to build my dream of toy museum but unfortunately one of the old man passed away in October 2005 and did not live to see his dream come true before my official opening in November."

The Museum occupies 2nd floor and half of 3rd floor.

Souvenir and Toy shop is on the ground floor.

Clay modelling classroom occupies 3rd floor and different classes are available on Fri, Sat and Sun.

And we were on television on 16 May 2006 !!

Ladies be careful when taking the lift alone at night

This happened to my cousin last Monday night: (Many times we thought S'pore is a safe place, but the police have always warned that low crime does not mean no crime)

She was returning home. It was already late past mid night due to a delay in the train home. Her friend called her mobile phone to check if she had reached home safely. She answered the call and said she was almost home. She had just reached the ground floor of her block.

She continued the conversation on the phone and entered the lift. Suddenly a quick hand from outside blocked the lift door from just closing. A straight punch came from the other hand right at her left eye. She was stunned, her vision blurred as her contact len dropped out from the punch. Her handphone that she was talking on dropped to the floor. Everything happened so fast. Before she could see her attacker, she was lifted and thrown to the back of the lift wall. Her attacker was trying to knock her out. Luckily she was tough and did not pass out and continued to fight back her attacker. Another punch to her right cheek, she screamed loudily for help. Another blow to her head cracked her skin and blood was oozing across her face. She tried to use her legs to kick as she was lying flat on the floor. Something scratched her left thigh deeply causing another blood bath onto the floor.

Fortunately, her neighbour was on his way out for supper. He noticed one of the lifts was stuck at a certain floor. The other lift came and he took the ride down. As he passed the jammed lift, he heard noises and cries for help. Sensing something not right, he rush back to where the jammed lift was.

A dark man opened the jammed lift from inside and told the neighour that a girl inside was hurt. As he leaned into the lift to have a good look, the attacker quickily stepped out and fled away. The neighbour saw the bloodbath and recognised my cousin as his neighbour and carried her home. The whole family was shocked and fearful of what had happened to their only girl.

The police came and condorned the place of assault to look for evidence. The ambulence took her to the hospital for a full check-up. Deep cuts on her forehead and left thigh. Concussioned left eye and bruised left cheek. Right elbow slightly cracked and cannot yet straightened her arm. Doctors reviewed her after a day of observation and allowed her to discharge for 2 weeks of rest at home. Fortunately, all her injuries can be healed in time.

(I cannot change the past or stop people from thinking all sorts of reasons why it happened to my cousin. I can only share this to help whose who read this be in a safer position. Peace.)

Having lost the luxury of a company-given namecard, I had to make one on my own. And pay for it.

Pre-version:

Something is missing.. hmm..
I decided on a motto or guide or what I am doing now. Fortunately, I had began consolidating my guide some time ago.

Version 1: Centered

Version 2: Used a business card template

Version 3: After comments by some friends that v2 is a little plain... and also added my Chinese name.

Version 4: Surfed the internet, found some 10,000 fonts, unlimited creativities such as movie title artwork and computer generated images such as nuclear holocaust, lightning words and liquid metal, etc. Took me 3 hrs surfing the net.

Version 5: Cannot see info on contact number, email and address clearly, so...

Comments welcomed. Thank you.

Lastly, it's Black & White: SGD10 per box of 100.
Post-dated amendment, it is SGD13 per box of 100, because I liked the silver paper instead of normal paper.

Some of my ex-colleagues got us to a nice restaurant for dinner last Thursday. It has been a while since we met up and for them, a time to unwind. We were chatting so much that we were chased out at 11pm as it was closing time.

Hi everyone.

I have been busy again.

Since my last entry, I have been meeting my friends, meeting my insurance agent, more meetings, family meetings, family money, attending talks, attending presentations, meeting another agent, swimming, yoga, meeting friends for supper, more yoga, more meetings, dinner, retreat, seminars, meeting friend for dinner and friend for supper, meeting friend for lunch and meeting new people.

Sound like I haven't have enough of meetings while working.

Its kinda fun to meet new people and make new friends again. But I have not forgotten to meet up with old friends, they are much more fun with much more things to catch up with. What all my friends do seem begin making connections in my head, between the old friends, among new friends and across my old and new friends. Hence more meeting arises. I get my friends to meet up so that they may connect. Hmm... I am beginning to sound like a dating service. Maybe I should really start one...

Personal: A Short Journey into a New Part of My Brain

Why is the brain is largely untapped?

One of my recent journey exposed and expanded my mind to the point of a over-whelming headache. Good thing that it resulted in a clearer picture. I asked how do I repeat the same over-whelming process to open up other parts of my mind.

PHYSICAL VS MENTAL
Atheletes often push their bodies to the limit. Exercising, straining, aching and extending. The body gets tired but grows. Why then do we not exercise our minds similarly? Would it grow too? If I may recall correctly, a quote from the Dune series, 'A machine uses its parts gets worn down. A human uses his gets stronger.'.

I will need to get more exercises, body aches and headaches...

Some of you (I am sure of one) may recognise the name Muad'Dib from the sci-fic series Dune by Frank Herbert, some may not.
The human unconscious longs for logic in the universe. His own logic. The real universe is always out of reach from his one logic.

I just finished reading this volume, 620 pages. To read and immerse means entering the minds of others. There are also many other ways to assiminate thoughts. Having exposed to more one hundred minds since my resignation has opened my mind exponentially. The excitement is still flowing. They say we use less than 1% of our brain most of the time, I feel it is true. They say if I don't do anything, knowledge means nothing.

My brain is throbbing, spinning with overload. Amazing, things are connecting and constantly expanding in my mind. Things are getting clearer with meanings to why things are done in certain manner.

Strength of the day:
I do not strive for perfection, for that is a luxury.
I strive for growth.

Another First in My Journey

Hi there, you may be wondering what I am doing with all my time since I am not working since 1 Feb 2006.
One thing for sure, sleeping in late. Woke up at 11am without any alarm clocks buzzing my head off...

INVESTMENT PLANNING
Since I have scheduled to meet my financial advisor for a lunch meeting, I woke up to a late breakfast, shaved and readied myself for the day. We reviewed my portfolio and made a few changes for my investments this year.

EMAILS AND SCHEDULES
Made some arrangements over the emails to meet more people. Updated some records in my contacts database.

BLOG
Setup my first blog, and here it is! Another first in my journey.

YOGA AND BODY BALANCE CLASSES
1 hour of Yoga, followed by 1 hour of Body Balance this evening. Part of a unlimited package for exercise classes at my local gym for a low flat fee. On other mornings and evenings, I attend other exercise classes to complement my physical fitness.
